Safety Integration of Fire Protection and Earthquake Resistance for Building Ventilation for the Pit Disassembly and Conversion Facility

The purpose of the Pit Disassembly and Conversion Facility (PDCF) is to convert weapons grade plutonium pits and metal into plutonium oxide as feed to the Mixed-oxide Fuel Fabrication Facility as part of the Department of Energy's (DOE) Surplus Plutonium Program. The enabling statue of the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (Board) requires it to review the design of new DOE defense nuclear facilities before their construction begins and to recommend to the Secretary of Energy design modifications the Board considers necessary to ensure adequate protection of the public health and safety. Certain major design changes are difficult to make late in the design and construction process and hence it is prudent to review the design early enough to have major impact on safety without a major impact on costs.
