Neutron Balance for Integrated Safeguards of a Reprocessing Facility

The neutron balance concept is a proposed new technique to perform integrated safeguards in the back-end of the nuclear fuel cycle. In particular, tracking plutonium from the time it comes into a reprocessing plant as a fuel assembly until it reaches the input accountability tank would be particularly beneficial. Tracking generation of neutrons as a function of time involves use of improved computer models including the Monte Carlo transport code MCNP/X and other processing codes.
