Research associated with MSRs, fusion, and sodium-cooled fast reactors (double tube heat exchangers) has resulted in technologies that can capture tritium in high-temperature systems. The challenge is how to develop an economic reliable system recognizing that if the system does not function, the reactor will have to be shut down until repairs are made. Because tritium in FLiBe migrates up the temperature gradient, it is preferable that tritium removal systems are upstream of the heat exchanger and downstream from the heat source. [30] Sweep gas systems are more effective than any other system at removing tritium; they should precede solid getters in both the primary and intermediate loops.
