The Resource-renewable BWR (RBWR) concepts were initially pursued by Hitachi in an attempt to design hard spectrum BWRs to provide missions traditionally assigned to liquid metal cooled reactors - fuel sustainability or TRU transmutation with unlimited recycling. By using a small pitch to diameter ratio (P/D=1.13), a triangular lattice and very high exit void fraction, the flux energy spectrum is epithermal to fast. Fig. 1 shows the flux spectrum at the top and bottom of the RBWR-Th core in comparison with those of a typical BWR and SFR. One-group microscopic cross sections are provided in Table I to show the extent of the axial spectral shift.
