Review of Safety Goals for Nuclear Power Plants in Korea

There are efforts to establish the safety goals for nuclear power plants since 1970s in the United States. In 1986, the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) established the safety goals of nuclear power plants in the Policy Statement [1], which included two qualitative safety goals and two quantitative health objectives. USNRC approved the use of the safety goals in regulatory decisions in the Policy Statement. It is mentioned that the safety goals are important in determining the regulations and that acceptance guidelines are defined based on the safety goals in the Regulatory Guide 1.174 [2]. In Korea, there are many discussions for safety goals of nuclear power plants in 1990s. As a result, the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission Notification stipulated the safety goals for Korean nuclear power plants in 2016.
