A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words and an Experiment is Worth Fifty Slides: Development of Experiments in Health Physics to Reinforce Basic Radiation Protection Concepts

Taking traditional health physics university courses or workshops are important to the student or researcher handling radioactive materials or working in the vicinity of radiation sources. Our experience has shown that the addition of experiments focusing on radiation protection and radioactivity counting has been viewed very positively by all the students. This has been observed through increases in course evaluation scores, enhanced performance on PhD qualifying examinations, and positive responses from employers. Experiments can indeed enhance the basic understanding of health physics. Universities can play an essential part in these educating and training endeavors.
