Economic Analysis of Iron Melting Technologies-- Computer Spreadsheet Models

Comparing coke-fired cupolas, induction furnaces and arc fur- naces for iron melting involves more than just the cost of energy used for melting. Each technology requires different charge compositions, maintenance and environmental controls. This makes simple comparisons of the three technologies difficult, because changes in one aspect can influence the entire cost structure. Computer spreadsheet models allow fast calculation of vari- ous melting scenarios using different energy, charge, labor, environmental and maintenance cost components. The models have already assisted two large foundries in making decisions on melting practices, to improve their profitability. In a case study, the computer models are used to provide cost data to a process and profitability study.
