Corrosion Behavior of Sand-Cast Red Brass Containing Bi and Se

Weight-loss and potentiodynamic polarization techniques have been used to clarify the corrosion kinetics of both the bismuth/ selenium (Bi/Se) alloy and the leaded C83600 alloy, in a number of aqueous environments. In general, the bismuth/selenium alloy displayed corrosion characteristics approximately equal to C83600, in all cases. However, in some specific environments, such as pH 6 with and without chloride, the bismuth/ selenium alloy appeared more resistant. It was found that pH and ammonium ions had the greatest influence on corrosion rate, while chloride ion, stirring and surface condition played minor roles. A number of techniques were used to clarify the corrosion mechanism.
