I found out just how much I needed to know to work for the railroad when I tried for a switchman position with the Port Terminal Railroad Association in Houston. My buddy, a former Southern Pacific brakeman, told me that his railroad, the terminal railroad, was hiring switchmen for yard jobs. He said he'd put in a good word for me, and I thought I'd go interview. After all, the worst they could say was that I was too old.
