One of the hardest things for conductors to do is balance the need to keep the train moving on schedule with sympathy for the poor souls running to catch your train. Some conductors are implacable; they say, "People wait for trains, trains don't wait for people." Others try to be more flexible, depending on just how long the "runners," as we call them, would have to wait for the next train. This can range from a couple of minutes in the case of a commuter train at rush hour, to a couple of days in the case of some of Amtrak's long-distance trains.
