From an early age, I appreciated the Reading Co. through my father's photographs, mostly exposed between 1959 and 1964, when he traveled upon and chased Reading's popular Iron Horse Rambles, operated with its impressive Class T-1 4-8-4 steam locomotives. These photos capture the Reading in its declining years, when empty yards and rusted sidings offered evidence of a much busier railroad while providing a somber backdrop to the thrill of mainline steam excursions. Many of these slides lack location captions, which contribute to the mystique of the Reading. It is vaguely familiar and simultaneously elusive.
