PHOENIX RISING IN WEST VIRGINIA

SUNDAY, JULY 30,1972. I was driving home from a stint as paid scoutmaster at Buckskin Scout Reservation, Dun-more, W.Va., and decided to detour to Cass. As I walked toward the shop, I could smell the indescribable odor of a building fire; as I passed the water tank and turned up Leatherbark Creek, I was met with a scene of utter desolation. Nothing was left of the landmark shop building but twisted girders and contorted steel sheeting; wisps of smoke still rose toward the sky.
