Giant commodities deals make Americas top region in Q1

Multi-billion dollar energy and softs deals made the Americas the top region for trade finance in the first quarter of 2016, according to Trade Finance Analytics data. Borrowers in the Americas received $30.47 billion in medium to long term trade finance in the first quarter, or nearly a third of the total Ql lending of $97.49 billion. Almost half of the Americas finance was for energy deals. The biggest portion of this was China Development Bank's $10 billion loan to Brazilian state-owned company Petrobras to allow it to repay mounting debts in exchange for providing Chinese companies with oil.
