Toll, Patrick and Pacific National to move deeper into rail freight?

The investment of more than a billion dollars in Pacific National by Toll Holdings and Patrick Corporation may well encourage freight to be preferentially transferred from road to rail in an effort to maximise returns on the investment. That is one of the conclusions reached by BIS Schrapel in its latest study of multi-modal freight which it forecasts will increase at an average of 4.2% to 2008 - with rail an increasingly dominant mode. BIS Schrapel project manager for the study, Gary Long, comments: "The incentive for both Toll and Patrick to encourage a freight transfer is the economies of scale offered by rail.
