The long journey to build a comprehensive rail network for New Zealand took a giant leap forward with the release of the first National Rail Strategy. Essentially a blueprint for the next decade, the strategy puts in place the building blocks necessary to catapult the rail network into a 21st century passenger and freight service. It comes hot-on-the-heels of the National Land Transport Strategy and will form part of an integrated approach to transport.
