Urban Transformations: Centres, Peripheries and Systems

摘要

Historically, urbanisation has been closely connected with the outcomes of industrialisation, when more and more inanimate sources of energy were used to enhance human productivity and larger and larger proportions of a population moved to live within urban areas. This process has continued, through various waves each characterised by its own peculiar features, up to the present day, and in recent decades it has been possible to witness the emergence of a set of peculiar transformations of the urbanisation process, in particular for what concerns growth and change phenomena within existing cities and city regions, that has been addressed alternatively as post-modern, post-industrial, post-urban as well as through other conceptual paradigms.
