The study of indigenous tourism has attracted a much-warranted concentration of research activity since the publication of Richard Butler and Tom Hinch's first edition of "Tourism and indigenous peoples" in 1996. The 1996 edited book became a companion to many tourism scholars interested in the debates surrounding indigenous peoples' relationships to tourism. The book provided good insight into the impacts of indigenous people's involvement in the tourism industry and became a frequently referenced resource in the research that followed. The departure point in Butler and Hinch's (1996) second edition is the critical exploration of how indigenous peoples are actively involved in the development, planning and delivery of tourism activities.
