The events industry has grown considerably in the past several years fueling a corresponding demand for academic education in events. In response to the need for textbooks to support the growing educational demand, the Elsevier Butterworth Heine-mann Events Management Series has been created. The series is composed of a series of books covering different facets of events and events education. Conferences and conventions: A global industry (2nd ed.) is one of the books in this series focused on conferences and conventions as a component of business tourism (Rogers, 2008, p. 1). There are currently seven other books in the series including those dedicated to event operations, event marketing, event design, risk management for events, event theory and research, destination marketing and human resources (Elsevier Butterworth Heinemann, 2008). This series provides faculty and management an alternative to the Wiley Event Management Series books - for several years the only series addressing event management. One of the significant differences between the two series is the more academic focus taken by the Elsevier Butterworth Heinemann books, both in terms of writing and intended audience.
