It used to be held that seaports and coastal resorts were essentially both separate in function and in place, and that if a port did become a resort, it was only because its trading role had decayed, and there was a vacuum to fill. What this collection of essay shows is that the reality was much messier. The complexity is well reviewed by the editors in their well-crafted introduction, who have taken their role further by encouraging cross reference when issues straddle contributions. There were instances when seaside pleasure replaced port commerce, and vice versa, when dock construction and shipping flows pushed away sea-bathing, but there were also places where the two co-existed. There could be tension over the use of the beach, and the nuisance of fish guts and old nets was never an asset, but fishing in particular fed the tourist gaze, and the fishing community found ways of harvesting the tourist.
