DATA SERVICES BOOST FOR MOBILE OPERATORS

Mobile data services now make up around 15% of all revenues generated by mobile operators worldwide, says Informa Telecoms & Media. Data services revenues increased 24% year on year in 2008 to reach $188.7 billion, although revenues remained flat in the fourth quarter at just below $49 billion. Some 40% of this revenue stream, $75.1 billion, came from non-SMS services, bolstered by the deployment of technologies such as HSPA and the growing demand for devices such the iPhone. There were 178.2 million mobile broadband subscriptions worldwide by the end of last year, says Informa.
