Located just 25 km south-west of central Berlin in an area of lakes and forests, the leafy city of Potsdam is the capital of the state of Brandenburg and home to around 180 000 people. The city's grand palaces were residences of Prussian kings and until 1918 the German Kaiser. Frederick the Great's lavish Rococo-style Sanssouci, the adjacent New Palace and its expansive grounds are Germany's largest UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition, Potsdam is a university city and a major centre of science, with more than 30 research institutes. Babelsberg film studios in the eastern suburbs of Potsdam is the oldest large-scale film studio in the world and has been producing films since 1912.
