Soon after French President Macron's election in spring 2017 one of the themes to emerge was that "grand projects" would be dropped for financial reasons to allow concentration on schemes to improve "everyday life". Mr Macron poured cold water on the clamour for more high speed rail lines in July 2017 when two more lines opened for service. Then in early 2018 his government cancelled a new airport planned to serve Rennes and Nantes, preferring to expand existing facilities.
