A new Spain-Portugal freight line

On 5 March the Spanish and Portuguese Prime Ministers and EU Commissioner for Transport, Violeta Bulc, attended an event in Elvas, Portugal, to mark the invitation to tender for construction of the new railway between Evora and Freixo, which will eventually form part of the Sines (PT) to Badajoz (ES) freight route, this in turn forming part of the Atlantic Corridor. The tenders are for: 1. a 38.4 km line linking Elvas and Alandroal, budgeted cost €220 million. 2. a 20.5 km line between Alandroal and Freixo, budgeted cost €105 million 3. a 20.5 km line between Freixo and Evora, budgeted cost €65 million. Here construction is to start in March 2019 and take 18 months. 4. electrification and tracklaying on the 105 km between Evora and Caia (on the border with Spain, just north-west of Badajoz), budgeted cost €128 million.
