ALPINE CROSSINGS: THE BRENNER BASE TUNNEL PROJECT

The old Brenner line The railway line over the Brenner Pass is one of the most important Alpine railway crossings, which links Germany and Austria with Italy. It was built in stages during the 19th century. Verona-Trento was completed on 19 September 1858, Kufstein-Innsbruck opened on 24 November 1858 and Trento-Bolzano followed on 17 May 1859. It took eight more years to complete the mountain section between Innsbruck and Bolzano. That was opened on 17 August 1867 as a single line although space for a second track had already been reserved. It was only in 1908 that doubling Innsbruck-Bolzano was completed.
