The concept of combining tobacco and molasses for shisha dates back to the early 19th century. As told by shisha manufacturer Soex India Pvt. Ltd. (a group company of Sopariwala Exports Pvt. Ltd.), an Egyptian man came across the combination by accident while eating his dinner of bread and molasses extracted from sugarcane. He was attempting to put tobacco into his water pipe and decided to use molasses as it was sticky and offered texture to the tobacco. He was happy with the outcome and even found that the molasses offered a unique flavor to the smoke. Thus, a new product was born. Today, that product is more popular than ever with its desirability extending beyond its traditional Eastern roots. Though the terms vary from place to place, the water pipe is generally known as the hookah and the tobacco as shisha or hubble bubble. The growth of shisha is impressive, even in a time of cutbacks and smoking restrictions-although it does make sense that hookah bars offer a haven to those who still wish to enjoy smoking in the company of others.
