Contrary to the situation in some other parts of the world, menthol cigarettes represent only a niche market in the European Union. While menthol cigarettes account for more than 60 percent of all cigarette sales in the Philippines and roughly 30 percent of the U.S. market, they represented just 4.8 percent of all EU cigarette purchases in 2014, according to Euromonitor International, a market research company. Across the EU, with its 28 member states and more than 508 million inhabitants, menthol cigarettes are the preferred smoke of an estimated 5 million people.
