Environmental Issues of Substituting Kuznetsk Coals for Ekibastuz Coals at Thermal Power Stations in Russia

Calculations were performed to determine the pollution of the environment caused by power stations operating on Ekibastuz coal from Kazakhstan with an annual capacity utilization factor of 0.75. It is shown that, given the new fines for emissions of pollutants and the storage of ash and slag established by the government of the Russian Federation in 2003, the replacement at these power stations of Ekibastuz coal by Grades G and D Kuznetsk coal is economically feasible, even when one considers the modifications that have to be made in the boiler and furnace equipment.
