The systematic study of the relationship between the dyestuff's structure and its textile properties is essential for development activities aiming at conceiving new dyestuffs. Reactive dyes are of paramount importance for yarn and fabric dyeing and for fabric printing. Reactive dyes have two elements that determine their textile characteristics: the chromophores and the binding group. It has been shown that the chromophores are responsible for the light, washing and bleaching fastnesses. The bonding groups are based on five components and have an important role to play concerning the dyestuff's penetration into the textile. Bi-functional reactive dyestuffs influence partially the fibrillation tendency of cellulose.
