Bridging Hadrian's Wall

In Spring 2003 the Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail was opened to the public. The opening of the trail marked the culmination of a ￡6M investment by The Countryside Agency and enabled visitors to the North of England to walk beside the wall across the breadth of the UK on an unbroken 84-mile trail. Some parts of the trail followed existing footpaths, which were upgraded to avoid erosion problems, but new sections of path were also needed to avoid long detours through country lanes, and a number of footbridges had to be designed and built to carry these sections of the trail over rivers and streams. The largest obstacle to be crossed by the Trail was the 25m wide River Irthing at Willowford. The Countryside Commission organised a design competition for this crossing which was won by the entry submitted by the Napper Partnership and Arup.
