EEFIT report on Peruvian earthquake highlights management problems in relief effort and reconstruction concerns

On August 15 2007 a magnitude 7.9 Earthquake struck the coast of central Peru, in the so-called 'ring of fire' at the subduction boundary between the Nazca and South American plates. There were 519 deaths and 1844 injuries following the collapse of more than 70 000 houses, mainly of traditional adobe construction. The costs were estimated at $450M. Members of the EEFIT team who visited Peru gave a preliminary report at a meeting at IStructE HQ recently on findings from a field mission carried out from 5-12 September 2007. They collected data and made particularly vulnerable.
