In the first of an occasional series, John Cairns from the School of the Built Environment, at Edinburgh's Heriot-Watt University analyses and compares the detailing of reinforcement as set out in the current standards.rnCodified rules for detailing of reinforced concrete are derived from national sources, commonly going back many years, and their origins are often obscured by the mists of time. When national Codes merge, as with the introduction of EC 2 to the UK, differences in established practices become apparent, and the revised rules will be unfamiliar to those accustomed to the provisions of BS 8110.
