A large proportion of Brazilian constructions do not include the use of wood, especially in their structures, which is inconsistent with the huge potential of construction timber in this country. In many instances, this omission of the material is ascribed to misconceptions and ignorance about its real potential, especially its mechanical strength and durability.rnBrazil's huge territory means that there is a great demand for bridges on secondary roads. The immense reserves of native and reforested wood, as well as the versatility of this material, enable timber to meet this demand efficiently, particularly in the case of bridges with small and medium-sized spans.rnThe log-concrete composite system has been studied by Brazilian researchers and several bridges have been built using this technique. The purpose of these works is to provide alternatives for the construction of safe and low-cost bridges, especially on secondary roads. Composite plate decks - consisting of log beams and a layer of reinforced concrete joined with steel connectors - are an excellent option, particularly from the standpoint of cost.
