Qualitative evaluation of the efficiency of composite bridge designs Four different bridge designs have mainly been adopted up to now for composite girder bridges without that there has been performed a systematic analysis of the economy, of the technical quality and of the sustainability of each design approach. This paper will therefore try to develop a generally valid evaluation of the efficiency of the mostly used composite bridge designs. As most important criterion for the efficiency of the different bridge designs the specific rate for the fabrication and erection of the steel structure is defined and its composition analysed in detail. The relation of this specific rate between the two mostly used designs, namely the spacious single cell box-girder on the one hand and the dual box-girder design with two smaller box-girders on the other hand, will be investigated for the example of a common girder bridge. Under the consideration of the available empirical data for the steel weights of executed composite bridges it then will be possible to obtain the relation of the total price for the steel structure of the two different bridge designs. These results will then be extended - not in the same profundity, but still with sufficient accuracy - to the further well known composite bridge designs. This enables the full evaluation of the efficiency of the steel structure for all important composite bridge designs. In order to be able to evaluate the overall efficiency of each composite bridge design it also will be necessary to evaluate the other important cost- and performance areas of a composite bridge like the construction of the concrete carriageway, the complex of corrosion protection, inside accesssibility and bridge maintenance as well as the structural redundancy. Only then it will be possible to generate an overall evaluation scheme for all investigated composite bridge designs.
