A senior defence official recently remarked to this reviewer that the MoD has almost ceased to use the term 'defence industrial base' because of the reaction it provokes in some political figures outside the ministry, who associate it closely with the wish (in their view improperly) to protect British firms in this sector. The contrast with the United States could scarcely be stronger, where there is a continuing, even growing, concern with the health and strength of the defence industrial base.
