Few scholars offer as grim a read as Professor Christopher Coker in full fettle, and he is in full fettle in his latest book, Barbarous Philosophers. This is of course partly because Coker deals with a grim subject - war and warfare - but primarily because he focuses on its very core, the human spirit that drives warfare. Looking into that heart of darkness, and laying bare its fury, logic and tragedy, is his unique specialty, in which he indulges with a gusto and dispassionate insight that few can match.
