In this 1919 essay, which won that year's Gold Medal (Military) Prize, JFC Fuller expounded his radical vision of the future of mobile warfare. He quickly grasped the possibilities of a new 'petrol age' in warfare. In a broad, expansive piece, he considers not only technology, but the essential qualities of leadership and soldiering, and is fiercely critical of the inbuilt conservatism of the high command. Fuller would make other important contributions to the pages of the RUSI Journal, but ultimately it would be German officers, such as Heinz Guderian, who would most swiftly adopt many of the ideas Fuller developed, and use them to devastating effect in the Second World War.
