Anonymous Soldiers: The Struggle for Israel, 1917-1947

Anyone who doubts that there is a great deal of truth in the old cliche of the terrorist and the freedom fighter would do well to read Anonymous Soldiers, Bruce Hoffman's impressive history of Zionist terrorism. In the period leading up to the foundation of Israel in 1948, Zionism was represented not only by politicians, propagandists and theoreticians, but also by two armed groups: the Irgun, founded by Ze'ev Jabotinsky, and the Lehi, which developed from an Irgun splinter group founded by Abraham Stern (usually referred to by the British as 'the Stern Gang'). Leaders and fighters from both groups later reached Israel's highest offices (including prime minister and president), while countless others are recorded as national heroes in museums, mausoleums and commemorative plaques.
