The state of European security has not been as unsettled as it is today since the end of the Cold War. In addition to pressing security concerns to its east and south, European liberal democracies now face severe challenges from nationalist opponents who seek, more or less coherently, the dismantlement of the post-1945 institutional architecture and its replacement with a 'Europe of nations'. While the Brexit vote in the UK followed by Trump's election are so far the most visible elements of this backlash, they may not be the last.
