True to Their Salt: Indigenous Personnel in Western Armed Forces

On 10 June 2014, the Iraqi city of Mosul fell suddenly and calamitously to Daesh (also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, ISIS). The Iraqi army, trained and built painstakingly over a decade by the US and other Western powers, melted away ignominiously. The army's capitulation exposed not only the weakness of the Iraqi government but also the failure of the US and its allies to construct an indigenous armed force that could provide security and stability in the country.
