The aspirations of Eurostar to expand its leisure travel market deeper into mainland Europe emerged at the same time as the UK's most adventurous charter train operator, Hertfordshire Rail Tours (HRT), was looking to add European destinations to its tour programme. Eurostar route manager Peter Bell and HRT managing director John Farrow opened discussions and overcame numerous hurdles before operating the groundbreaking 'Atlantique Coast Express' from Waterloo and Ashford to La Rochelle and return in just one day on September 16.
