The East Coast route is Britain's fastest main line but, although services have been increased as more people travel by train, speeds have started to decline. Every alternate year I contribute the British information for the World Speed Survey in Railway Gazette International, compiled by Dr Colin Taylor. Last autumn I had to comment that high-speed train performance had, in the main, declined over the previous two years. Only on the East Coast route were timings holding up, as befitted Great North Eastern Railway's claims to be 'Britain's Fastest Railway'.
