FERRYBRIDGE-Dedication fails to prevent closure

The announcement earlier this year (RM Sept) that EWS is to close ten traction maintenance depots came as a particular shock where Ferrybridge was concerned. For the building is less than ten years old and had been considered safe as a result of its recent conversion to a dedicated shunter 'centre of excellence'. In BR days, shunters were dealt with at depots all over the country and whenever necessary were called to a main works for major overhaul. Under EWS in the latter half of the 1990s, the main depot for each region - Motherweil, Canton, Toton, Old Oak Common, Allerton, Immingham, Eastleigh, Thornaby and Bescot (latterly reduced to the first six) - took over most maintenance work, but EWS then selected the former National Power facility at Ferrybridge as a central location specialising in Class 08 and 09 overhauls.
