Workhorse A4 No. 60009 Union of South Africa has been withdrawn from main line work for six months following its third failure in a month. There is a policy of withdrawing engines from the main line if there are three failures in a short space of time and No. 9 thus follows GWR'King' 6024 and Standard No. 71000 Duke of Gloucester in this respect. No. 9 failed at Mirfield, West Yorkshire, with an air-compressor fault on a Crewe to Scarborough Railway Touring Company trip on August 29. The previous failure was an air pipe from the compressor. The main line was blocked for around 90 minutes while an EWS Class 66 was summoned from the nearby Healey Mills.
