Oldest surviving Barclay to celebrate loco-building anniversary in Scotland

Keith Lobley, owner of Andrew Barclay 0-4-0ST Swanscombe (699/1891) -the oldest surviving loco built by the firm - is looking forward to celebrating the 150th anniversary of Barclay locomotive construction by taking his engine to Scotland in 2009. The Andrew Barclay engineering business began in 1840 but the first loco built by the company was not until 1859. In 1990, the anniversary was marked by a book produced by the firm, featuring Swanscombe on the front cover. Today, part of the Caledonia Works site in Kilmarnock is operated by Brush-Barclay (successors to Andrew Barclay) and the current parent company. Brush Traction, is interested in a 150th celebration centred on Swanscombe - provisionally in June 2009.
