East Midlands Trains has unveiled the first HST set to carry Stagecoach colours (RM Jun p4) and the train has been attracting attention on its travels along the Sheffield-London route. As with its initial Class 222 in a similar colour scheme, EMT is waiting for comments from passengers and stakeholders before repainting the other sets in the fleet. So far the comments on the transformation have been favourable, some saying that while it suits the 30-year-old HSTs, the predominance of white means the sets will have to be kept clean. Refurbishment of the interiors, last undertaken during the Midland Mainline franchise in 2003, is something else for which EMT is drawing up development plans. When the new livery was unveiled at Leeds Neville Hill depot on April 30, the event included the naming of power car No. 43048 T.C.B. Miller MBE. While the name may not be familiar, it was suggested by railway journalist Roger Ford, who has campaigned for some years to provide a fitting tribute to Terry Miller. He led the British Rail design team at Derby that produced the HST, - the train that has proved to be a one others are judged by. Unveiling of the nameplate was carried out by Terry's son John.
