To a steam enthusiast, the name Beattock evokes images of Pacifics and 4-6-0s whistling for bankers, of long smoky plods into the Harthope hills and that eventual feeling of relief as the lonely Summit signalbox came in sight. One could almost visualise the fireman wiping his brow and then hurling his shovel from the cab!
