Our selection for 'Picture of the Month' is this classic shot taken in Sonning cutting, east of Reading, showing Great Western 'King' 4-6-0 No. 6023 King Edward II heading the up 'Red Dragon' from Cardiff to Paddington on July 5,1961, just a year before withdrawal and subsequent sale to Woodham's scrapyard at Barry. Unlike the locosrnfeatured elsewhere in this issue, 6023 escaped the cutter's torch and is currently undergoing restoration as a single-chimneyed example of the class by the Great Western Society at Didcot.
