Loss of skills is major worry

I was asked the other day whether heritage lines are losing volunteer manpower as the generations that can remember steam trains as an everyday event, begin to fade away.rnNostalgia has certainly diminished as a motivation for volunteering, but most heritage railways have succeeded in their approach to the recruitment - and, equally importantly - the retention of volunteers, which has compensated for the gradual loss of our original pioneers. I have not, therefore, noticed any such diminution in our volunteer workforce; although that's not to say that we don't need to recruit more.
