A £6million project to stabilise a section of the Settle & Carlisle line near Kirkby Thore has been carried out by Network Rail.rnFor nearly 40 years, the area has been subject to a 30mph restriction due to the appearance of 'sink' holes caused by local mine workings.rnIn July, work was carried out over a three-week period to three separate bridges, as well as to the railway embankment. The track on a section of line nearly a mile long was also replaced - and two concrete slabs have been cast over the trackbed to strengthen and stabilise it in case new sink holes reappear in the future. Continuously-welded rails were then laid on top of the slab sections.
