One of the worst cases of cylinder failure in recent years befell Standard 5MT 4-6-0 No. 73096 during the Mid-Hants Railway's March 13-15 spring steam gala (RM May). About a mile from Ropley, while heading the 10.25 Alresford-Alton on March 14, the loco's left-side cylinder literally exploded, hurling metal to the bottom of a bank beside the lineside fence.rnA Class 33 diesel was sent to rescue the train, but suffered a traction motor flashover and a brief fire, meaning another diesel had to be dispatched.
